Gunfight at the O.K. Corral
Published in Paperback by Fulcrum Pub (01 September, 2001)
Authors: Thom Ross and Paul Andrew Hutton
Average review score:

Stop running Ike, you're safe here
Normally on the 26th of October, I view the 1957 movie
"Gunfight at the O. K. Corral" with Burt Lancaster and
Kirt Douglas. I know exactly what I am getting which is
entertainment.

This year I flipped through the Thom Ross book by the
same title and again I was entertained. The Preface said
History but my gut reaction said entertainment. The
history here is fast and loose. Like the movie this book
is FICTION and should be accepted as such.

Enjoy the exquisite paintings. but ignore the connection
between the paintings and the text. And between the text
and History because it isn't here. In fact ignore the text
altogether. Buy this book for the paintings.
and you have a bargain

I do not wish to list the many historical errors of the Ross
and Hutton book here. That might ruin your enjoyment of the
paintings. On this the 120th anniversary of the gunfight
between good and evil, stay focused on the main event.
Don't worry about desecration. Think consecration. History
can wait. this is the age of art and entertainment. If you
have to blame anyone, blame the proofreader. What does he
know?

A great Western myth captured in paint
Thom Ross knows his O.K. Corral history -- there's no doubt about that -- but it is the O.K. Corral myth that he really seeks to translate into the painting contained in this book. Whereas most Western American art is firmly realistic, often almost photographic in intent, Ross's art dares to venture into the realm of the abstract to better capture those elements of myth. In nearly fifty paintings, accompanied by his own text, Thom Ross tells the story of this most famous gunfight in history. I cannot think of another book which has ever sought to achieve such an end, so I believe that Ross deserves double praise for his creativity. If you don't know much about this event, then "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" is not at all a bad place to begin learning. But even if you have read a dozen books about that day in Tombstone, Ross's book will still have a powerful impact. And after you close the covers of this slender volume, those images remain in your vision, haunting and somehow very alive.

The Hamilton Conspiracy
Published in Paperback by Metropolis Ink (February, 2002)
Author: Andrew Segal
Average review score:

INSURED FOR KIDNAP, MURDER AND BANKRUPTCY
An exciting thriller with a fantastic, unpredictable storyline and rich use of vocabulary. The Hamilton Conspiracy is an excellent character-driven action thriller that follows the fortunes and mis-fortunes of a man fighting to avoid personal and financial ruin.

Some great characters and good storytelling kept me reading this book well into the early hours.

An incredible read ¿ a brilliant mystery
I hate saying I couldn't put it down but it's true. The plot unravels at a pace and is full of twists and turns. I was delighted that I was unable to guess what was coming next and there was no way I could have predicted the ending.

It is the story of Jack Gregory, a wealthy guy, who is a business professional. Events conspire to ruin both him and his reputation. How is he going to fight back?

I enjoyed the plot, admired Jack's determination and was enthralled by the characters - especially the bad guys.

I don't want to spoil it for you by giving too much away but suffice to say it was a great read, which made me laugh and made me cry. I couldn't get it out of my mind and kept wondering what was going to happen next and exploring ideas of what I would do in Jack's position. I hope other readers enjoy it as much as I did.

Hanina My Son: A Novel of the First Century
Published in Hardcover by Gefen Books (01 December, 2000)
Author: Andrew Sanders
Average review score:

A Jewish first Century Healer during the Roman Occupatio
Does anyone think that times have changed much in over two thousand years? Hanina My Son, by Andrew Sanders, weaves a charming story of romance, mysticism and healing power. Told by Hanina's fictional son-in-law Archinas, now aged, he reflects back on the fascinating life of his father -in-law Rabbi Hanina Ben Dosa. This is a novel of the First Century, and many will delight in meeting another healer of the Galilee, a contemporary of Jesus of Nazareth. For students of the Bible, both Christian and Jewish as well as those history buffs interested in this period of time - Andrew Sanders gives us insight into the historical background at the time of the Roman Ocupation of the Jewish Nation and thereafter. By the end of the book, we have a much clearer understanding of the various religious and political factions that existed at that time, as well as greater insight into the operation of the Sanhedrin ( the Jewish religious court). Famous leaders and sages are described throughout, like Rabbi Akiva, Rabbi Joshua ben Hananiya and Rabbi Eliezer ben Hyrkanus - all the while interacting with the simple man of God from the Galilee - Rabbi Hanina Ben Dosa - loved by the poor butmistrusted by some of the more established and powerful men of the Sanhedrin. For those who like history, Bible and Romance, this is a book for you to read. Sanders takes us right into the First Century so that we feel we are there. Told with wit, sensitivity and an historian's eye for details, we are enlightened with factual knowledge of what went on then ; as well, our souls are elevated by having met another simple but powerful man of God who works his 'mysterious magic' in the Jewish world. A love story of Hanina and his wife and of their daughter and son-in-law is woven throughout the novel, holding our interest and bringing lightness to the greater depth of the historical goings on of the times. A great read which I do highly recommed.

Hanina my Son
I would like to bring a new historical novel to the Reader's attention: "Hanina my Son" by Andrew Sanders (Publisher: Gefen, Israel. A friend acquainted me with this book and I would like to do the same service to others.

It is refreshing in the current fast-paced times to find a quiet, pleasant, slow-moving, but very interesting book about past times.

Hanina ben Dosa lived in the first century Israel. He was a modest, simple man who spent his life as a healer among the poor in the Galilee, just like another well-known personality of those times, Jesus. It was an exciting period in general, as well as in Jewish history, with the rebellion against the Romans, the destruction of the Temple, the birth of Christianity and modern Judaism as well. The book brings this era alive from a Jewish viewpoint, and with a very broad knowledge of the subject. I appreciated it, as I had very scant ideas of those times. I also liked that the writer made his protagonists very much like living people, not like saints, although most of them were great sages.

I recommend this book to all those who like to learn and are interested in our heritage from the distance of 2000 years.

Harm Reduction Psychotherapy: The New Treatment for Drug and Alcohol Problems
Published in Hardcover by Jason Aronson (June, 2002)
Author: Andrew Tatarsky
Average review score:

A More Humane Approach
Those of us who struggle to control our own alcohol or drug use, or who live with someone who is trying to cut down or quit, may greet the harm reduction approach, persuasively presented by Dr. Andrew Tatarsky, as good news indeed. A practicing psychotherapist, Tatarsky is concerned with meeting clients "where they live": In the context of drug and alcohol abuse, this entails exploring the meanings these substances hold for the individual user and grounding the therapy in the process of self-discovery---rather than requiring abstinence from the outset, which is the traditional "one-size-fits-all" approach to counseling.

The book describes ten cases, each from a different therapist who practiced "harm reduction" in treating his or her client. Many readers will be both riveted and moved by the experience of peering into these intimate sessions. The stories are well told (if somewhat unevenly written), and their subjects come across as real people. Even more compelling is Tatarsky's framing commentary, which draws out the significance of each case: the complex interaction of personal and social factors that led this particular individual to seek meaning (liberation, escape, validation) in drug use.

As to alcohol abuse, which is a component in most of these case studies, the harm reduction approach is controversial in not prescribing an outcome from the start. It flies in the face of conventional wisdom, which holds that "problem drinkers" (read, alcoholics-in-the-making) lose control after just one or two drinks. The individuals portrayed so appealingly in this book are empowered by their therapists to explore the space between quitting altogether and drinking to excess. About half of them achieve stable moderation; the others discover for themselves that abstinence is the more comfortable and successful route to reducing the harm in their lives.

Readers who are not clinicians but worry about these matters will find fresh insights in this accessible introduction to harm reduction. Changing one's behavior is an intensely emotional journey best undertaken in the company of a wise therapist or caring support group. The book should be read by every psychotherapist, social worker, and counselor who deals with problems of substance abuse, directly or indirectly---that would be just about all of them. Then, they might wish to recommend the book to those of their clients who are ready for it. This layperson was able to identify with both clients and clinicians, engaged together in life-changing work.

Move over AA, there's a new kid on the block
Andrew Tatarsky and his contributors have brought the honesty, the sympathy, and the efficacy of harm reduction into the treatment of substance users, and it's about time!

"Just Say No" has failed 95% of drug users who seek treatment to have better control over their life and their substance use. It has failed them because drug use is not a disease, and abstinence is not a cure. Men and women (and young men and young women) use drugs for their benefits, although drugs, of all kinds --licit and illicit-- are not without their risks.

However the risk of developing a drug (and/or alcohol) problem does not derive solely from the drug. Tens of millions of people have had positive experiences with alcohol, marijuana, opiates, and psychydelic substances. Doesn't it make sense to identify what internal and what external factors cause a particular individual to suffer from a drug problem, rather than proclaiming drug use itself as a sickness.

Standard abstinence therapies and their institutions function by glorifying guilt, helplessness, and continuous self degradation. Standard abstinence therapy fails the overwhelming majority of people.

Tatarsky's book demonstrates, through well written and sympathetic case studies, another way to help people who have problems with their drug use, and it seems to be a better way. This book can make a huge difference in the lives of millions of people.

Have Not Been the Same: The Canrock Renaissance 1985-1995
Published in Paperback by ECW Press (August, 2001)
Authors: Michael Barclay, Jason Schneider, and Ian Andrew Dylan Jack
Average review score:

A Must-Have for any Canadian Rock Music Fan
This book is quite brilliant, Michael Barclay along with Ian A.D Jack and Jason Schneider have put together an amazing book which looks at various Canadian musicians between 1985-1995. I found this book great because it sort of shined light on a lot of amazing bands and individual musicians throughout this era that didn't have a source detailing their history, influence etc.

Being a big fan of Halifax bands as well (sloan, thrush hermit, etc.) I was very happy when i saw that the halifax scene or "underground" was given a very detailed account.

The histories of several bands were given full chapters such as The tragically Hip, Blue Rodeo and Sloan. The punk music scene in Western Canada was also given a spotlight. All-in-all any music fan would love this! I definetly do!

An excellent compendum
The bible on Canadian Rock is reverently written, and interesting through and through, chock full of fascinating information and in depth looks at the finest of the CanRock scene, including the oft-overlooked Sloan. Well worth reading.

The Health of Nations: Infectious Disease, Environmental Change, and Their Effects on National Security and Development
Published in Paperback by MIT Press (01 November, 2001)
Author: Andrew T. Price-Smith
Average review score:

Brings Deep Expertise Within Reach of the Public

The author is the student who excelled at the University of Toronto, where Thomas F. Homer-Dixon is a professor (and himself author of "Environment, Scarcity, and Violence"), and is now a professor at the University of Southern Florida.

Although the Central Intelligence Agency got this right in the 1970's, clearly warning U.S. policymakers that AIDS and related diseases were "the" catastrophic threat to national security and regional stability in the closing quarter of the 20th century, and although the United Nations and its various agencies have clearly understood the relationship between disease, environmental degradation, and instability--with all that instability brings in terms of crime, forced migration, and so on, the author gets five stars for doing an absolutely brilliant job of putting all of this knowledge--and his own original contributions--into a readable volume that can be understood by the most loosely-educated policymakers we have, as well as the voting public.

The author does a superb job of both crediting others (e.g. Laurie Garrett, whose stunning book "BETRAYAL OF TRUST: The Collapse of Global Public Health" we reviewed last year) while weaving his own insights into the story. ERIDs are "emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases." They matter more now because, as the author summarizes it, modern man is in a very different situation today: "individuals can travel around the world rapidly by airplane, and overpopulation and the growth of megacities have created entirely new 'disease pools' that will allow new pathogens to emerge and flourish."

The author has done a fine job of documenting how "human-induced worldwide environmental destruction" is both releasing pathogens from their hiding places in rain forests, launching new microbes that wreak havoc on aquatic life, and proliferating resistant strains of micobial terrorists we do not understand. Bacteria, in brief, are a thousand to a million times more deadly that any terrorist gang, and we would be wise to get our priorities straight as we set about pretending to govern.

As a general statement, the author appears to have done very very well as identifying intervening variables that could be analyzed, and his conclusions on what needs to be done are "President ready." He not only makes his case, he ends by calling for a massive increase in "health intelligence," and thereby demonstrates a wit lacking in most academics.

The notes are excellent, there is no bibliography, and the index is so mediocre it might as well not have been included--there is also no biography of this talented author, a grevious lack. The book should be reissued with this deficiencies being corrected.

A needed addition to political science literature
For vexing reasons, political scientists have long neglected the role of health in understanding societal stability and regime transitions. Price-Smith begins to fill this void by offering this excellent genesis for the field of health security. Using some of the models developed by Thomas Homer-Dixon regarding nonrationality and complex causality, Price-Smith critically examines how HIV, malaria and TB, among other, could have potentially devastating consequences--for the developing and the developed world.

What makes this book all the more useful is that Price-Smith goes beyond the anecdotal or journalistic accounts that have dominated our understanding of public health's relationship to politics. He provides both rigorous statistical analysis and compelling case studies to prove his points. His writing style is clear and unassuming, a welcome approach for those without an extensive public health/biology background.

Henry Moore: Sculpting the 20th Century
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (April, 2001)
Authors: Julian Andrews, Dallas Museum of Art, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, National Gallery of Art (U.S.), and Dorothy M. Kosinski
Average review score:

Outstanding!
This book radiates with the beauty of Henry Moore, and helps us to recognize those more recent sculptors such as Donald Wright, who have perhaps surpassed the master.

Provides Moore enthusiasts with a body of works
Moore is one of the most beloved sculptors of the 20th century, yet his work has fallen out of favor with the modern critics: this seeks to reassess Moore's crucial contribution to art of the last century, examining his early experiments with primitivism and his later probe into modernist pieces. The focus on his early works in particular provides Moore enthusiasts with a body of works and approaches not seen in many other considerations of his works.
